![]() ![]() Steve Weinik, a Philadelphia-based photographer and assistant producer on the documentary Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tilesoffered a theory about the cryptic happenings. While the date suggests they were created last year, when they were installed is unknown. A third, larger tile read, “HOUSE OF HADES, THE RESURRECTION, OF TOYNBEE’S IDEAS, IN SOCIETY 2021, PUBLIC NOTICE.” Two small tiles contained cryptic “HH” and “21” messages, the Scranton Times-Observer reported. Toynbee, who wrote about the resurrection of man. And researchers suspect Toynbee is a reference to 20th-century British historian Arnold J. 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which a crew of explorers is dispatched to the planet Jupiter. Their sinister message is familiar to those with an eye for art, but a Toynbee tile expert said these Lackawanna County pop-up pieces have a different origin than their hometown counterparts.įirst appearing in Philadelphia in the 1980s, hundreds of Toynbee tiles have since been sighted in 25 cities across the eastern United States and South America. Three tiles featuring elements of the Philly originals were recently spotted on downtown city streets.
